5/29/2023 0 Comments Skunk by Alyce MillerAs growing urban wildlife populations bring humans and skunks ever closer, Miller’s book will help us understand-and appreciate-these beautiful, intriguing, and wholly distinct animals. Moving from nature to culture, Miller delves into the long line of skunks that have played parts in literature, film, and folklore, from the antics of Pepe Le Pew to the role of skunks in Native American spiritual beliefs. More than being unappreciated, skunks, Miller reveals, have a long history of persecution: killed off as smelly nuisances, they have also been hunted for their fur and, yes, their unique musk, which has found a perhaps unexpected use in perfume. and oh, boy, when they do it, no one can ignore them.īut there’s far more to skunks than their stench, and with this beautifully illustrated entry in Reaktion’s Animal series, Alyce Miller gives these furry scavengers their due. More than being unappreciated, skunks, Miller reveals, have a long history of persecution: killed off as smelly nuisances, they have also been hunted for their fur and, yes, their unique musk, which has found a perhaps unexpected use in perfume. Solitary, nocturnal creatures, skunks generally go about their business unnoticed.

That was it, she was on her own, as she was for most of the next ten years while Adams represented the newly independent nation abroad.Ībigail Adams is the best known of the women who influenced the founders, but there are many more, starting with Martha Washington, who once referred to herself as a “prisoner of state” for the constraints placed on her as the first First Lady. While the men were writing the rebellious words, the women were living the revolution, with the Redcoats on their doorsteps. At least that’s what Abigail Adams did for John, starting when he went off to the Continental Congress, which eventually declared the independence of the American colonies from the British. While the "fathers" were off founding the country, what were the women doing? Running their husband’s businesses, raising their children plus providing political information and advice. Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation 5/29/2023 0 Comments A beautiful country by wangWow, I’ve said a lot already! Let’s dive into this review.įirst of all: wow, what a powerful memoir. It’s so refined, the mark of someone who was born to be a writer and has cultivated their craft. The author is a lawyer by trade, but is a fellow bookworm, which shows in her prose. And, to be honest, I’m glad that I came in blind because it allowed me to have my socks blown out of the water. I should’ve read the premise or book blurb, or even the reviews about it on The New York Times, but I went in completely blind. I will also admit, I knew nothing about the premise of this memoir going in, and had originally assumed that it was going to be just another immigrant memoir. So I borrowed the audiobook, and man did I devour this book. That was insane to me, especially because it had just come out and most of the time when things come out, there’s a months long waiting list just to get a copy of it. I first read about it on The New York Times, but what compelled me to actually get to it was the fact that I saw it on Libby ready to be borrowed right here. I’ve heard so much about this book, and it literally just came out. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Looking good dead reviewIt knows when to be different and when to be similar. However, what sets this one apart is, shockingly, its familiarity. These films are bound to be crowd-pleasing ones when done with just the right amount of pandering and familiarity, but in most cases, they end up turning into middling and empty entries that fail to recapture anything remotely close to the original. This makes Lee Cronin’s new Evil Dead film far more like a legacy sequel, right up the alley of the Halloween reboot trilogy and the recent crop of Scream films. The Necronomicon (The Book of the Dead) is here, unsuspecting flesh are, once again, possessed by deadites and turned into foul, mischievous murderers, and a chainsaw is just hanging around in the corner. The original Sam Raimi film, perhaps infamous for using practical kitchen ingredients like karo syrup, creamed corn, and red food coloring to convincingly produce viscous and yucky body horror gore despite its low-budget, is spiritually present throughout this fifth installment. Because for the uninitiated, this latest reboot might seem like the most repulsive, vile, and wretched thing ever committed to screen, but for the Evil Dead franchise, this is just a lunch break - a delicious one at that. You should probably enter Evil Dead Rise knowing what to expect. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Hosoi skateboarderHosoi would also pioneer a number of his own tricks, most notably the rocket air and Christ air, and won countless vert and street contests worldwide through the dawn of the ’90s. With his flamboyant charisma, giant airs, and a touch of spandex, Hosoi became the style-based antithesis to Tony Hawk’s more trick-difficulty-based contest runs. In 1985, Christian’s release of the patented Hammerhead shape under Hosoi Skates took the world by storm and quickly inspired every other major company to come up with outlandish shapes of their own. On the heels of Tony Alva, “Holmes” blurred the line between rock star and pro skater and also became the third pro after Brad Bowman and TA to launch his own brand and namesake, Hosoi Skates, following brief stints with Powell-Peralta, Dogtown, Sims, and Alva Skates. He then rose with the surging tide of the ’80s vertical skateboarding boom to become the godfather / superstar of going big and looking good while doing it. After honing his skills with constant access to Marina del Rey Skatepark, which his father, Ivan, managed from the late 1970s to the early ’80s, Christian Hosoi got his first photo in Skateboarder magazine at age 11, and by age 14 turned pro for Sims. 5/28/2023 0 Comments The silmarillion martin shawIlluvatar first creates the angelic powers or Ainur, and teaches them to sing to a melody He has made. The first part is called the Ainulindale and tells of the creation of the world by Eru, the One, who the Elves call Illuvatar. There are actually five parts to the Silmarilion. That was indeed his intention when he began writing these stories of the Elder Days and to some extent he did succeed. It is an excellent book, and Tolkien is, in his way, comparable to the great composers of national epics like Homer or Vergil. This is not to say that The Silmarilion is not a good book to read. The characters are all kings and heroes of ancient times, not humble gardeners. There is little room for the sort of humble details of everyday life found in The Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings. The stories are epic tales of gods, elves and men fighting against the first, and far mightier, dark lord Morgoth. The Silmarilion is written entirely in the grand style. The solution: create a recipe that will make Hunter leave town permanently. But she can't afford to split her profits. To make matters worse, the town committee has decided to split the upcoming summer festival contract between the two, forcing Emma to work with her nemesis. Hunter, it turns out, is opening a fancy new restaurant and bakery right on the waterfront-Emma's competition. Until gorgeous, smooth-talking newcomer Hunter Kane strolls into her shop, Fairy Cakes-and Emma makes the mistake of selling him not one, but three Sweet Success cupcakes. It's a strange gift, but it brings only happiness. Emma Holloway, like her grandmother before her, bakes wishes into her delicious cupcakes, granting the recipient comfort, sweet dreams, or any number of good things. The Holloway women are a little different. Most families have a favorite recipe or two, handed down through generations. The Holloway women are a little different. There’s a very special kind of sweetness to life on Pine Cove Island. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Real Friends by Shannon HaleThe author talks about it and her OCD symptoms in the afterward, and provides online resources for help and information. The narrator experiences symptoms of depression, which offers a good chance to talk with readers about mental health. Eighth-graders bring alcohol to a friend's house, and the narrator has a strong, negative reaction. Bullying kids at school use name calling to humiliate and physically harass a smaller student. The author also talks more about it, and how to handle it, in the note afterward. An incident of sexual harassment is vaguely illustrated, but the victim's fear and disgust afterward is clearly shown. A few illustrations show kissing that's partly obscured. Shannon's in eighth grade now, so some kissing and romantic dynamics become a big part of the story.
